Nobody really plays on server, and when nobody is online, there really is nothing to do.. Short Review: This is a beautifully crafted world where you collect things and goof off with animals. Perfect for any fan of the Shelter series. Definitely worth the small price tag. Play on the server with the most players, not your region.Long Review: I'm going to give a breakdown of everything this game has to offer.First, if you loved the art style of Shelter 1 and 2 you will definitely be in for more of that wonderful world. The objective of the game is to collect essence, which you get from literally anything that sparkles, but there are also these big obelisks which drop a ton of essence but can only be opened with other animals. So the best way to get essence is find a bunch of other animals and go on an adventure together to find obelisks. This is the bread and butter of this game, interacting with others. There's no voice or text chat, the only way to communicate is with emotes and actions, which has a similar beauty to it that Journey did. This game is very peaceful and will get you smiling a lot. I think I had a big grin on my face the majority of the time I was playing this.So what is essence for? Well as you collect more you'll unlock new emotes and skins for the current animal you are playing and also work towards getting new animals. Progress towards animals is the same across all animals, so don't worry about switching. Here's a tip: If you click the button at the bottom right you can see a map for a short time that shows you where the Tree is, the direction North is, and where other players are. Also the button next to that will show you your current progress towards unlockables.Unlockable animals in order:Badger cub (default)FrogRabbitGoatFoxPheasantHedgehogEach animal has different running and swimming speeds as well as jump heights, and some obelisks need specific animals to open. Each animal also has a bunch of emotes and skins to unlock so there's a lot of things to work towards unlocking.Changing animals once you unlock them is simple. Go back to the Den from the pause menu. This is the main menu. Now look at the side to the right of the menu. Click on any of the animals to switch to them. Now there's also a bunch of stuff you get when you own other Shelter products. Here's the breakdown:Shelter 1 gives you Momma BadgerShelter 2 gives you Momma LynxPaws gives you Baby LynxOwning all three games gives you Baby BearShelter 2: Mountains DLC gives a fire emoteShelter Soundtrack gives a Badger howl emote Shelter 2 Soundtrack gives a Lynx howl emote Shelter 2: Mountains EP gives another Lynx howl emotePaws Soundtrack gives a baby Lynx howl emoteMeadow Soundtrack gives a baby Badger howl emoteLonesome Fog ebook gives a Fog emoteFables from the Den ebook gives you a rain cloud emoteBlossom ebook gives you a flower emoteSymbols ebook gives you the WolfArt of Shelter ebook gives you a unique skin on all animalsOwning every Shelter related product gives you the Eagle. The Eagle is really cool in that he can fly really high and traverse the world very easily. The downside is you can't collect essence so the only real point to playing him is to explore or to help other animals find essence easier. Up to you if you think it's worth it. Also I might be wrong but I think the products that relate to Meadow don't count towards getting the Eagle unlocked as they came out afterwards. All in all I say this game is most definitely worth the cheap price tag and it's a must for any Shelter fan. And I'm sure the more Shelter content comes out the more stuff you'll get in Meadow. Good thing to tide you over till Shelter 3 comes out. Also as I mentioned above, your best bet is to play on the server with the most active members. When I played for some reason the Europe server had the most players (went up to about 40 out of 50 which was fun) also be mindful of the time when you get on. This is a small game that not an absolute ton of people play but there are enough people to make it enjoyable. And of course you picking it up will add to the pool and make this game more active. So join us!. [As a note: this is a shared account between me and my dad. I now have my own steam account, but since we bought Meadow on here and I use the family sharing method to play it, I'm not sure I can leave a review on my own account.]My grandmother died on my birthday, just this week. Tragic, I know, but that isn't really what this review is about. It's about Meadow, and how this game has helped me -- is helping me -- recover. When I first bought this game, I didn't think much of it. I loved the Shelter series, especially Shelter 2, but the lack of a chat system and a distinct goal (at first glance) didn't appeal to me as much as I thought it would. So, I shelved it. When I picked it up again, it was my birthday. I had recently received the news of my grandmother's passing, and the two friends who were there with me at the time had to leave before it got dark. I turned on my computer, stared at my Steam library for a few moments, and launched Meadow. I didn't realize at the time how much this game would soon mean to me.What at first was an annoying system of chat that I had to figure out how to communicate with, suddenly became natural for me. I had no clue how to express what I was feeling in words -- so I didn't. I expressed it in symbols, actions, and emotes. I was able to share my grief without making anyone else upset, or ruining their day. This was important to me -- for a long time, I've had a deep-seated feeling of guilt about sharing my grief. I didn't want to suffer alone, but I didn't want anyone else to suffer with me, either. Because no one fully understood the reason for my question marks and crying faces, no one else was hurt by my grief. Moreover, as I followed a leaping deer through the fog, I realized I was beginning to use my crying faces and question marks less and less. They were instead replaced with laughing faces as I set my lynx on fire by accident and the deer gave a shocked little emoticon. Something about this game just invariably makes you smile. Maybe it's the cute animals, or the patchwork art style so reminiscent of children's books, or the fact that the community is so wholesome. I don't know. What I do know is that this game unlocked something inside of me. It didn't quite fill the hole that was left by my grandmother's passing, but it did put a little shield around it, preventing it from being damaged further. I'm not sure, but I think it's maybe even starting to stitch it up, just a bit. I realized I didn't care too much about the obelisks or the essence you can collect, although they were all pretty cool. I cared about the stories, about the people I met and laughed with. About climbing the center tree to the highest branch I could find, then sleeping there for a few minutes, just enjoying the scenery...and then jumping off to the most hilarious falling animation I've ever seen. There's no death in this game, and so when I fell face-first in a pile of dust into the bushes, I could pick myself back up again and walk it off. That's the beauty of Meadow, I think. There is no sorrow in this game, except maybe the tearful goodbyes of when someone has to log off. I truly believe that jumping off the center tree was almost a metaphor for my future. It helped me see that someday, I'll pick myself up and walk it off, too. And that makes the grief just a little more bearable while it's here. For me, this game isn't as much a game as it is a coping mechanism. I came into the game upset, trying to process the tragedy in my life, but at the same time just wanting to table it for another time, to forget anything ever happened at all. As I played, my grief became less bitter to swallow, and soon I was laughing. It wasn't that I forgot about my grandmother. It wasn't just a distraction; I saw my grandmother in everything I did. But I got to see her death in a more positive light. I got to see death itself in a more positive light. When I set my lynx on fire, and then stood up and walked it off, I realized that my grandmother's death was not the end. The lynx that stood up after the fire was not the same lynx -- it was the family and friends of the lynx that died in that fire. And they stood up, they walked it off, and they survived. And that's exactly what I will do -- with time. Lots and lots of time, spent playing in the Meadow and leaping off giant trees. Thank you, Meadow.. I can not even explain to you how much I have loved this game!Recently, after a year of not playing, I've come back and started the Meadow journey once again. It was like coming back to a childhood game! After 3 years since the game's release, I still find the environment and artistic style to be utterly fantastic and beautiful! When I first entered the game, I was met with an amazing community and tons of love. I consider the game to be an, 'occult classic'. The developers are still updating the game with more content, which I find to be the best part. Though, I know that this is a game meant for a VERY specific community within Steam. I still think that it's another thing that makes it so amazing, that people with the same interests in games as you are the ones that are playing it. I have to say though, there haven't been as many people on the servers anymore, there's usually only people on the European server, you'd have to get on at around 12 pm (ET) or around 3 pm (ET), which is why I personally only play on the weekends... But still, it's a game worth experiencing! The more features that the devs add, the better the game gets, as well as the communications within the Meadow community! I don't ever plan on forgetting this game or the people that I have encountered within it. This is a game of hidden beauty!. I enjoyed this game So Much. It's a real change from the games I'm use to playing. Very pleasant and peaceful.Everyone's very cool and friendly xDDLike a Garden of Eden for gamers.
